Welcome to Economy of States

The home of US economic data for the mildly curious

USA GDP by Key Classification 1997, 2007, 2009 & 2015If you want to know how your state is performing economically and how industries are performing within your state, then you’ve come to the right place. Economy of States is a perfect source of objective analysis focused on the context, direction and momentum of key statistics published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, Bureau of Labour Statistics and others. Be informed when deciding your next career move, where to relocate, or managing your 401k.

To understand context, direction and momentum we reveal how the economy has evolved by state and industry from 1997 to 2015. We split that period into three:

The Pre-Recession Period of 1997 to 2007

The Great Recession Period of 2008 to 2009

The Post Recession Period from 2010 to 2015

If you can increase your knowledge of what happened in these three periods, you will be better placed to accurately interpret the economic data for 2016 and beyond.

The Author

I am a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland and former CEO & CFO of International retail brands in the USA & UK, where I lived for almost 15 years. I've visited, worked or lived in 37 US States (so far), and even spent 3rd grade at the Sacred Heart School in Leavenworth, Kansas. I currently live in Ireland with my wife of 30 years, as our two kids make their way in life in London and Chicago. I have witnessed two economic crashes in my working life and believe there is an easier way for people to turn top line economic data into knowledge, without becoming an economist. The economyofstates.com is my attempt to achieve that objective and I hope you find it worthwhile dropping by.
